Following the Routeburn trip, which can either be done one way or a return loop via the Greenstone, we did a loop up the Greenstone that splits and goes through beech forest, climbs through open scree slopes far above the Greenstone valley and then comes to a basin where Lake Rere lies. The loop continues down an old stock trail and finishes along the west shore of Lake Wakatipi following a track through the Greenstone station. Lake Rere was a good lunch stop and a chance to see some very large trout jumping. Both the Greenstone and Caples Rivers are known for rainbow and brown trout fishing
