Countdown







Every story has a preamble, and ours begins in 1981 when we left for New Zealand prior to starting my internship. We had a wonderful time back packing including the Milford and Abel Tasman, as well as exploring a country that is as beautiful as the people are friendly; most of all our dear friends the Mitchells and now including the  Condons. 
Fast forward 35 years-- It's 2016, the eve of New Years eve, and the beginning of my retirement and a new era in our lives.  We're packed and excited to head back to Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud as the Maori call  NZ;  a time to reacquaint ourselves to each other and this lovely and fantastic country!

Akaroa-- History, beauty, and conservancy

Akaroa is a small town on the Banks Peninsula with a strong French influence.   The french whalers in the early 1800's had settled this area, developing a small village.   In 1838 the captain of the Cachalot, a French whaling ship "purchased" land from a local Maori chief.  He then went back to France and convinced the government to back an expedition to colonize this area for France.  5 days prior to the French colonists arrival back in 1840, the British crown had signed the Treaty of Waitangi with all of the Maori chiefs from both islands, resulting in all of New Zealand being under British rule.   Mssr. Lavaud, the french leader was met at the harbor entrance by a British warship informing him France had no claim.  In order to avoid a potential conflict, he struck the french flag from his mast, raised the Union Jack in acknowledgement of Britain's rule, and "the rest is history". Farewell

Unbelievably, these two months have flown by and it is our time to say goodbye.   Bonnie and I have been so thankful for God's good graces in being with us throughout our travels.  We have experienced His wonderful creation both in the beauty of the land, but more so in the wonderful Kiwi folks who have been such gracious hosts. We are especially grateful for Mark, Mike, Susi, Katy, James, Lorraine, Rick, and Sue as well as our many other occasional hosts throughout our stay.  Without you our trip would not have been so rich and memorable...... Mark Mitchell, our wonderful host Orchard crew extraordinaire!
